Different Types of Carpets

Not all carpet designs and types are made for every lifestyle or location. Some types of carpets are made for luxurious rooms or low traffic areas, while some others are ideal for the usual wear and tear of a home with kids and pets. The good thing about carpets is that it can be a low-cost flooring option for families. What’s more, is that carpets can act as a sound barrier between rooms while adding warmth and luxury to your home.

This guide can help you pick between the different types of carpet styles and choose which type of carpet style and fibre matches your requirement, budget and purpose.

Wool Carpets

Wool, one of the superior materials for soft carpets, always holds its legacy of luxury. The material is natural and has a woven construction. Wool carpets are available in a wide range of designs, details and colours in comparison to the common tufted carpets. Expect excellent stain resistance, as long as you care for it as soon as something is dropped on it. It also has great flame retardant characteristics.

Nylon Carpets

Nylon carpets come next to wool in terms of performance and feel, but have the advantage of a lower cost. As a man-made material, it is more robust than natural fibres. This adaptable fibre can be found in plenty of styles and constructions: shag, frieze, loop cut loop (LCL) and textured. Nylon carpets have exceptional soil resistance, colour fastness and flexibility, so that it can bounce back, making it a great flooring option for just about anywhere.

Polypropylene Carpets

Polypropylene (olefin) is a solution-dyed synthetic that is water-resistant and stain-resistant, making it an exceptional choice for indoor/outdoor carpeting. As Polypropylene is solution-dyed, the colour will not fade, making it good for areas that get a lot of light or is located outside or near a chlorinated pool. Because it is less flexible than nylon, it can be used in low-pile carpets like Berbers (low, loop-pile carpeting with stripes of different colours).

Polyester Carpets

Polyester is recognised for its soft texture, specifically when used in luxuriously thick carpets. It’s a great value choice, as its styling aspects are competitive with nylon carpets—it can be designed into a loop or cut loop, and it takes colour exceptionally well. However, it is not as flexible as nylon. Polyester is soil-resistant, adept for rough use and good for bedrooms as well as playrooms.

Triexta Carpets

One of the most modern fibres to hit the market is triexta which features a mix of the performance characteristics of nylon and polyester: long-lasting, stain and soil-resistant, colourfast, easy to clean, soft and fade-resistant. The material is made from a polymer, 37% of which is made from the renewable resource; corn.
